A New Spot

The other day we picked up a kitty/perch condo for Sneakers and Isis to use in the computer room and get away from Raiden. It's perfect for a kitty to sit on and look out the window, and Sneakers likes it a lot.

I also made sure to show Loki this is something she can climb (she tends to assume she can climb everything).

Introducing: Isis

I just realized there's a new member of our family I haven't posted about yet.

Isis

Her name is Isis. She's a beautiful, small, black and white kitty who made herself known at the end of last month. I think she was living as a stray around our house at least since we moved in, possibly longer, since I had seen glimpses of a tuxedo cat before. She could have been left by the previous owners of the house.

12. Kitty

I saw her outside one morning, got her close enough to pet her, and left some food and water out for her. The next morning she was in our backyard on the porch, meowing at us. Our screen door is missing the lower half of the screen, and when I opened the back door, there she was, practically already inside the house.

Isis

I wasn't sure about keeping her at first and asked around for anyone else to take her in, not really wanting her to go to the humane society or animal control. Pretty soon, though, it became apparent that this was her home, and so we decided to keep her.

15. Stray Kitty

She's been to the vet, and has probably already been spayed (she has a scar where it would have been done). She's a good cat, the only problems coming from our other, jealous cat, Sneakers. He's an old man and is grumpy sometimes, but we're working on it.

14. Stray Kitty

I'm glad to have her here.

Learn Something New Tuesday 8/23/11

I had no idea that birds are so hilarious, you guys... they are so much fun to watch. :)

It's time for Learn Something New Tuesday!

If you had $1000 to spend right now on a single thing, what would it be?
This is hard... everything I can think of falls short of $1000 or way beyond $1000. I'm going to say home renovations, if it counts as one thing. Like the changes we want to make to the master bath, or enclosing the back porch as another room. I haven't priced either of those yet though so I could be way off my $1000 mark.

Which one of your pets is your favorite?

No way could I pick a favorite! They are all special to me in their own ways. Sneakers (the cat) is cuddly, but the birds, Loki (the bearded dragon) and Genbu (the tortoise) are all so fun to watch and interact with.

Did you ever own a waterbed?

Nope. I remember desperately wanting one as a kid but I have no idea why now.

What is your favorite color gummy bear?

Clear.

Do you have any favorite shows that are coming back on soon?

Doctor Who and Glee will both be on again soon!

Do you have any great bloggy friends?

I have some, I have met some really great people online and through my Hearing Sparks blog.

Two Little Birds

This weekend we added two new little individuals to our growing herd of pets. We now have two little finches in addition to our cat, bearded dragon, and leopard tortoise.

Scotty had been wanting finches for awhile - his grandfather kept them and he thought it would be nice. My only experience with birds was with the cockatiels we had growing up, so I had to do some research and find out what finches need before we committed to two little guys (or girls. Who knows?).

Finches

We picked out a society finch, and I named her Mochi. The other is a spice finch named Inari. They have a nice, cozy little spot in our dining room, and they've already cost us some money in terms of buying new pans to avoid the hazardous nonstick coating. (You see, we went to Target to buy the pans, which was very dangerous. I blame them completely for the amount that popped up at the register.)

New Finches

They are super fun little guys - very active. Mochi is much more relaxed and laid back than Inari, but they are both enjoying exploring their cage and eating way more than their body weight in hay, finch food and mustard greens.

Finches

I expect to have them around for a long time to come!

About my Pets: Sneakers the Cat

I thought some of my readers might be interested in more information about the pets I have, especially the exotic ones, so I figured they each deserve their own blog posts!

--

Sneakers' Lazy Day 2

Sneakers is a tuxedo (black and white) cat. He is probably the least exotic of my three pets but he holds his own! I love cats. Dogs, too, but I enjoy cats' ability to relax, stretch out, and enjoy life quietly.

06

All about Sneakers: Sneakers is about 14 years old. He came to my grandma (Nana) in 1997 through a rescue organization at Petsmart or Petco. I was reading Beverly Cleary's Socks at the time, and given the kitten's white paws, I thought "Sneakers" was a great name for him.

Yaaaawn

In time, Sneakers found a home at my parents'. When they divorced, he lived with my mother, but he grew stressed out around her other cats. We took him in when we lived in our apartment. When we had to move back to my in-laws', he went back to my mother's. Now that we have our own house, our little boomerang cat is back for good!

Cat in Bookcase

Sneakers has a lot of personality and is very loving. He is very fluffy, so he looks fat. Most of it's just fur, but I won't deny, he's a heavy cat, very well-built with strong bones. He is very loving and affectionate, sometimes too affectionate. His favorite toy is his "mousies," those tiny soft mice you see in multi-packs at the store. He chases them around, carries them, licks them, and chews on them. He also loves treats, and likes to "beg" for them.

DITL 7: Begging

Sneakers is a very healthy cat for being 14. In fact, he pretty much has no health problems. He's such a great cat (when he's on his own in a household) - I hope that his health continues for many more years.

About My Pets: Genbu the Leopard Tortoise

I thought some of my readers might be interested in more information about the pets I have, especially the exotic ones, so I figured they each deserve their own blog posts!

Genbu exploring

Genbu is a young leopard tortoise. We bought Genbu on April 8, 2011, and according to the pet store, he was about a year old when we got him.

A little bit of care information: Leopard tortoises are from Africa. They live about 100 years, and reach about 18 inches in size, up to 24 inches. Leopard tortoises do best outside when they are big enough; in the meantime they can be housed indoors in a variety of situations. Just like bearded dragons, they require a large amount of space, a basking spot, and UV light bulb. They eat hay and manufactured tortoise food plus a variety of other greens, vegetables, and fruit (although food beyond hay and greens should be on a "treat" basis). They do not eat proteins like insects or animals. Their rate of growth, and whether or not their shell stays smooth, depends on the quality of their diet. (We're hoping Genbu's shell smooths out somewhat as he grows.)

Genbu - April 19, 2011

All about Genbu: Genbu is still little, only about 3'' - 4'' long. He loves anything sweet, so we know any fruit will be a treat for him. Right now he is in a cage intended for a rabbit or guinea pig. This type of cage allows for better ventilation than an aquarium or reptile tank since tortoises are so low to the ground. Once he is big enough to be outside, we will move him to our backyard.

33
Note: I am very cautious with Genbu and Loki together. Animals can be unpredictable... I always advise caution when putting two together :)

Genbu has a lot of personality and is very stubborn. He looks like a grumpy old man, but he's definitely enthusiastic about a lot of things (namely, good food and warm baths).

Genbu the Leopard Tortoise Eating 2

I am very excited to see how he grows up.

About My Pets: Loki the Bearded Dragon

I thought some of my readers might be interested in more information about the pets I have, especially the exotic ones, so I figured they each deserve their own blog posts!

--

Loki 5

Loki is a bearded dragon, known to enthusiasts as a "beardie." Beardies are lizards from Australia, and are some of the friendliest reptiles you can own as pets. They become acclimated easily to humans, they're a good size without being overly large, and they very rarely bite or act aggressive.

A little bit of care information: Bearded dragons require an enclosure of at least 40 gallons when fully grown, and they prefer more space than that. They like horizontal space, space to run around, more so than they enjoy vertical space to climb up. They need a basking spot, UV light, water (usually in the form of baths, as they won't often drink standing water), and a diet of protein (crickets, worms, roaches, and the extremely occasional pinkie mouse), and greens/veggies. They can't be housed together except as small babies, so plan on multiple enclosures if you buy more than one. I have found Bearded Dragon.org to be a great resource for all of my beardie questions; definitely do your research before taking responsibility for one of these beautiful animals.

All about Loki: I bought Loki from Petsmart on June 13, 2010. I'd estimate she was probably 4-8 weeks old at the time, making her a little over a year at the time of this blog post. I had just lost the first baby bearded dragon I bought, also named Loki. He must have been sick when we took him home, as he died the day after we brought him home. I was sad, but in her tank, Loki cheered me up. She was absolutely tiny but acting like she was several times her size, "glass dancing" against the side of her cage.

Loki - June 2010

She grew very quickly over the past year. She seems to be around her adult size now, between 17 and 18 inches long. I have been most impressed just by her personality. She is very laid-back and easy-going, although like many beardies she gets a little moody when she is shedding (how would you like to deal with your skin falling off and still smile?).

Loki - July 2010

Loki is a "normal" beardie, meaning she has typical colors of a natural/normal bearded dragon, but there are many people breeding exotic colors. I like Loki just as she is, though. She has very pretty tan, yellow, and purple markings.

Loki - October 2010

We have taken Loki to the vet a few times since buying her: once for a normal checkup and then to see if she had a parasite infection, which she did. It's important to make sure you have a good exotic animal vet if you need one for your exotic pet. We go to the Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital, which is excellent. In fact, they helped us out a lot simply by figuring out that Loki is a girl! It can be hard to determine the gender of bearded dragons before they hit maturity.

It's really fun to hang around with Loki. She's a big personality in a tiny scaled body!

Learn Something New Tuesday - 5/17

Okay, so I'm a day late, but I still wanted to answer the questions! I was at a conference about social media all day yesterday and didn't want to pay the hotel's wifi prices...

Life with the Dietrichs

1. How old does someone have to be to be officially an ‘adult’ to you?
I'd say in their early twenties... 18 may be technically an adult but it doesn't feel that way to me. And of course, I know some people who are much older than me that I wouldn't consider adults!

2.Would you get along with someone who reminded you of yourself?
Yeah, I think so. Scotty reminds me a lot of myself sometimes, and most of my friends remind me of myself.

3. Did you ever seriously think that a monster was hiding under your bed?
If I thought about it, I knew it was silly... but I was definitely afraid of monsters under my bed as a kid :)

4. Did you ever have a black and white cat?
Yes! I still have one. Sneakers:

5. Last time you used hand sanitizer?
A few minutes ago. I use that stuff all the time.

6. Do you like wearing your hair up or down?
Down... but lately it's been up because my hair has been obnoxious.

Lazy Easter

Today is a lazy day. Actually, it's an enforced lazy day. Nothing is open. We were all set to go shopping, too.

But I think I should take a cue from Sneakers on this one.

Sneakers' Lazy Day 3

This cat knows how to relax. He's got it made.

Sneakers' Lazy Day 2

And that blanket he loves so much is calling my name, too.

Happy Easter, everyone!

A pathetic tortoise, and an award!

I am feeling pretty bad for our new little tortoise friend today.

He has some kind of respiratory infection, he's slightly underweight and he has parasites, according to the vet Scotty took him to Saturday. (our awesome vet)

So, he has to be dewormed, daily baths and (gulp) 10 shots over the course of 20 days. He is done with 2 of the shots and boy is he pathetic. I know... how can a tortoise look pathetic? They just look like grumpy old men, right? Well, Genbu manages it. We gave him a shot this morning. It goes in the pectoral muscle, so, his "shoulder", essentially. Gave him the shot, set him down, and he started wandering around without moving the leg on the side he got the shot on. Just dragged it around looking all sad.

Poor little dude. I know it's for the best, and hopefully he perks up soon, stops having a runny nose and starts eating.

In happier news I won an award from Jen at What Would Jen Do! Jen is an awesome person and you should all go read her. Thanks Jen!

To accept the award I have to post 5 facts about myself and then pass it on.

1. Sometimes I use completely the wrong word for the sentence I'm trying to say. Usually I get my point across but sometimes I get some weird looks. I don't know why I do it, my brain just inserts another random word in place of the right one.

2. Chocolate settles my stomach. No, really! I have IBS and usually chocolate is bad for IBS sufferers, but for me, it helps calm my tummy down. My sweet tooth appreciates it.

3. I love driving or walking around looking at houses. Scotty and I have been going on evening walks and my favorite part of it is seeing what other people do with their houses and yards.

4. I completely adore animals and find it impossible to kill anything, including bugs. Eventually I might end up a vegetarian, but I really love steaks and burgers and... let's not think about it too much.

5. My hair is so freaking wavy/curly, especially when it's short, that I get a lot of comments that I must have gotten a perm or curled my hair. Strangers never believe it does it on its own. I have learned to embrace it.

Passing it on to:

1. Enjoying the Small Things Each entry is like its own world to sit down and enjoy. Beautiful pictures and words.
2. Dreamers of Dreams Brieann's writing is always so thoughtful.
3. Morningstar Happenings This is a great, funny blog, following one family's story, including adoption.
4. life and love and wings My sister-in-law writes about her daily life, music and becoming an adult.

Introducing Genbu

My husband has loved tortoises for years and years. They've always been one of his favorite animals (sea turtles are first!) but of course so many tortoise species need to be housed outside and need lots of room, so getting a tortoise had to wait until we bought a house.

Luckily our new yard has plenty of space to roam, because we now have a beautiful little leopard tortoise!

His name is Genbu, and he's just adorable. He has a slightly runny nose we are keeping an eye on (luckily I know an excellent reptile vet because of Loki), and he's a little shy, getting used to his new surroundings, but he's perfect.

He's only about 3.25'' long now - but he'll get bigger!

A few pictures.

Loki and Genbu
Loki and Genbu. This cracks me up because it is about a half-second before Loki realized that Genbu is a living, breathing creature and started to puff up. She had no idea what to think of him!

And a few of Loki just so she doesn't feel deprived with her new "brother"...
Loki asleep
While my in-laws were here, Loki was running around like crazy. Then she jumped off me onto the seat of the couch, stuck her head under the blanket and fell asleep.

Our first week at home

This weekend Scotty and I moved into our new house - new to us, at least, and ours. We got the keys on Friday, and we spent the weekend moving (with the help of our awesome family), shopping (Ikea and other furniture stores - fun, but stressful!), and decorating our home.

I've wanted a house for a long, long time, and various setbacks and just the wandering way that life takes put it on the backburner for awhile. Scotty and I have for years remarked on and evaluated every house with a for-sale sign in front that we passed. I did research months ahead of time, and we knew in our minds what we wanted, so the process of picking out a house was relatively easy. As soon as we stepped into this one, which was only the second house we saw on our first day looking with the realtor, I felt comfortable, and happy.

I've been comfortable here ever since. Somehow it really feels like home even though I've only lived here five days. I usually talk in my sleep when I'm stressed or in a new place - both of those are accurate, but I haven't talked once.
Sneakers assists with Ikea construction.

We bought furniture over the weekend, all of which except for the sofa is in its proper place now, and discovered a few things: our little Chevrolet Cobalt can hold more Ikea boxes than we thought, Scotty is truly excellent at picking out rugs (for the wood floors in our living room, dining area and hallway), and our driveway is an optical illusion (it looks shorter than it is - it's actually very long).

We also got my cat back - Sneakers, a 14-year-old black and white kitty who originally belonged to my grandmother, then my parents, then us, then my mom and now us again. And of course, my bearded dragon Loki came with us, too. They're getting along pretty well. Sneakers is curious, but neither of them are aggressive or fearful of each other.

Hopefully I'll be able to blog/write more when everything settles and we get our computers set up. I feel like my Hearing Sparks blog is languishing, and can't wait to start writing again.

10 Good Things on a Monday 2/7

10 things I want for the future house:

1. A washer/dryer. Hopefully, this will be the first big purchase. I'm leaning towards the LG brand, and probably bright red...
2. A comfy, comfy sofa. Something with a chaise!
3. That lamp I saw at Hobby Lobby, which sadly was no longer there when I went to buy it with a gift card from Christmas. It was shaped like a tree trunk, with birds flitting in and out of it.
4. An alligator-shaped bathtub mat.
5. A basketball hoop.
6. A sulcata tortoise.
7. A nice new desk. Nothing big; something simple, like this.
8. This toy box to hold Loki's supplies. It matches her new vivarium!
9. A dresser.
10. A bigger TV. (Eventually.)

(Now, if only we'd hear back from the bank...)

10 Good Things on a Monday 1/31

10 things that make me smile:

1. Thinking about decorating our new house.
2. Scotty's smile.
3. The way Loki runs around like crazy on the floor, licking everything and exploring.
4. The after-the-rain smell outside right now.
5. The three tiny little cow erasers on my desk.
6. Seeing a pile of courier books on my desk at work, ready to be read.
7. Angry Birds. (I just downloaded it yesterday. I don't know why I didn't try it sooner.)
8. Sleepy puppies, like my mom's boxer Ruger the other day - puppy yawns are so adorable.
9. Hugging my mom. She gives great hugs.
10. Looking through amazing photos on Flickr.

Loki's new castle

Scotty and I have been working on this project for awhile: a castle for Loki's tank, with a hide, basking spot, and spot for her food dish. It's made out of polystyrene (pieces attached with wood glue), grout, textured "stone" paint, and a layer of Mod Podge; the bricks were done with Sharpie.

Here it is, completed, in her tank:

It was really a very simple project, and can probably be done in a week or so. We just took our time with it.

I introduced it to her first before it was in her tank. She loved it right away and decided to "storm" it.

It was like she knew it was hers.

Once it was in the tank she quickly became fixated on one spot (where the Mod Podge slightly discolored the layer of grout beneath).

All in all, a really fun project for a really fun pet.

Speaking of Loki, how cute is this? It's a bad cellphone picture, but you get the idea.

She snuggled right up to my neck and practically fell asleep. Cutest thing ever.

Another Day in the Life: Jan 1, 2011

Here is my DITL for January 1, 2011... this month is all about the rounded edges! I had a cold or something going on with my sinuses this past week (which particularly sucked yesterday, which I spent throwing up and huddled in bed) but I did manage to take pictures.

DITL 01 - Midnight Kiss, Black and White
Midnight on New Year's! A kiss to celebrate 2011.

DITL 03 - Ready for Bed
And then a dose of generic Nyquil, to ensure I can sleep the night.

DITL 04 - Alarm
Yep... I definitely managed to sleep! Luckily Scotty fed Loki at her normal time, or she'd be really unhappy.

DITL 05 - Tissues
A recurring theme.

DITL 06 - Loki in Her Tree
Good morning, Loki.

DITL 07 - Fighting a Cold
Good morning, medicine.

DITL 08 - Internetting
Good morning, Internet, and Groupon.

DITL 09 - Cow Necklace
I go get ready for the day with my cow necklace (a Christmas present from Alicia and Chris).

DITL 11 - Star
Geeky hairclip, also from Alicia and Chris!

DITL 17 - Erasers
We also got these adorable erasers! Sorry it's blurry... but aren't they cute?

DITL 18 - Euchre
When we get home, Scott, Virginia, Chris and Alicia are playing euchre. (Alicia is holding the giraffe eraser that also came with the cows and panda above, which I gave to her.)

DITL 19 - Scott with the Move

DITL 20 - Playing with the Move
Scott & Scotty play some Sports Champions.

DITL 21 - Uno
And then we all play Uno.

DITL 22 - Loki Ready for Bed
Around this time, I went to check in on Loki, and realized the cool side of her tank was really much cooler than it should be. So I shut the window in the room, which brought up the temperature quite a bit. She finally turned light again (after being dark all day), ate some munchies, and then went to get ready for bed.

DITL 23 - Loki
So freakin' cute.

DITL 24 - Jack in the Box
Scotty and I are sent to Jack in the Box to procure tacos and spicy chicken sandwiches for everyone. 14 tacos!!

DITL 25 - Epic Mickey
